Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) is a Google model designed to highlight newer content in search results when a topic is trending, evolving quickly, or subject to frequent updates.
The concept was created to identify moments when users are looking for the most current information and to deliver timely content that meets those expectations.
For instance, if a breaking news story occurs, QDF may push articles published within the last few minutes or hours to the top of search results.
Interestingly, QDF was in place before Google rolled out its official freshness algorithm update in 2011.
The freshness algorithm refined this approach by deciding when to show up-to-date content—particularly for:
- News and trending searches
- Regularly recurring events
- Topics where details change often

How Does QDF Work?

Back in 2007, Amit Singhal, then Google’s Head of Search, explained in an interview with The New York Times:
“The QDF solution revolves around determining whether a topic is ‘hot.’ If news sites or blog posts are actively writing about it, the model concludes that users are more likely to expect up-to-date information. The model also evaluates Google’s own vast stream of search queries.”
Google identifies when content was published or updated through different signals. However, freshness alone doesn’t determine rankings—factors like authority and trustworthiness of the site remain equally important.
